FIFO Construction Jobs

A formwork carpenter in hi-vis kneeling to drill formwork panels together while a crew places concrete from a pump boom over steel mesh, with a mixer truck and a processing plant behind at sunrise

Before a mine can run, somebody has to build the camp, the roads, the concrete pads and the plant. That is FIFO construction, and the difference from a mine's daily work is that these jobs are projects, and projects end. If you have a trade or a machine licence, or you are willing to start as a labourer, there is a build to join.

What FIFO construction is

FIFO construction is building work on remote sites, such as camps, roads, concrete and plant, done on a fly in fly out roster. The jobs are carpenters and formworkers, concreters, plant operators, trades assistants, labourers and the supervisors who lead the crews.

FIFO construction jobs: Where to start

Find FIFO construction jobs

Search FIFO construction on SEEK (opens in a new tab), on Indeed (opens in a new tab) and on Jora (opens in a new tab), and also "FIFO civil", "formwork carpenter", "concreter" and "trades assistant". The labour hire agencies' own pages list crews too.

Before you apply, check where each ad's flights leave from, called the point of hire. Getting there is usually up to you.

Can you get a FIFO construction job with no experience?

Short answer

A FIFO construction job with no experience is possible as a labourer or a trades assistant, needing a White Card and, on some ads, a licence. The concreter, carpenter and operator ads want experience.

A trades assistant, or TA, carries, prepares and cleans up for the trade. One agency's ad had a TA working beside plumbers and electricians on a camp extension, a six-month project on a 2:1 roster, two weeks on and one week off.

Labourer ads ask for tickets rather than a trade. A civil contractor's ad for trades assistants and labourers on Pilbara dewatering teams in Western Australia asked for a heavy rigid licence, the licence for a heavy truck. A Perth labourer ad for asbestos removal asked for a friable asbestos ticket.

Another agency's ad for demolition labourers took people with the ticket or willing to get it, started them on Perth projects, and offered FIFO once they were part of the team.

How do you get a FIFO construction job, step by step?

Short answer

You get a FIFO construction job with a licence, the White Card and the ticket a labouring start asks for, or with a trade for the skilled crews. Labour hire agencies and the contractors that build do the hiring.

From no experience, in WA

  1. Get a manual driver's licence, a police check and a White Card before you apply (what the ads ask for). Every course asks for your USI (Unique Student Identifier), a free number you make online.
  2. Take a labouring or trades assistant start, and add the ticket the labourer ads name, such as a heavy rigid truck licence for the Pilbara dewatering crews (where to get it).
  3. Live in Perth if you can, because the concrete crews and their supervisors fly from there (where they fly from).
  4. Take a Perth start if that's what's offered: one demolition agency started its labourers in town and offered them FIFO later (starting in Perth).
  5. Register with labour hire agencies, such as Western Work Force or Fetch Recruitment, and apply to the contractors in the same week (who hires).
  6. Never pay an agency or anyone else to put you forward for a job (the fee rule).
  7. Once you're offered the job, the employer books the flights, the site induction and the medical and drug test.
  8. On your first swing, expect long days of formwork, pours and stripping, and a contract that finishes with the build (a typical day).

With a trade, or outside WA

With a carpentry trade or time on a machine, follow the carpenter or operator steps instead. Outside WA, a few ads flew people from the other capitals (rosters and flights).

What are fly in fly out construction jobs, and who hires?

Short answer

Fly in fly out construction jobs are projects on remote sites, hired by construction contractors and by labour hire agencies that supply their crews. The jobs are tied to projects, so how long one lasts depends on the build.

The owner of a mine or a solar farm pays a construction contractor to build, and the contractor or an agency hires the crew. Fetch Recruitment and Western Work Force were two of the labour hire agencies advertising crews in October 2026.

The contractors advertised too. One construction contractor wanted carpenters, trades assistants and operators for a major remote project on a 2:1 roster, full time. A second wanted operators across civil, mining and renewables work, with "work streams running for years".

The roles in the ads

FIFO builder jobs: what the ads call them

No ad on the first page of SEEK, Jora or Indeed in October 2026 was titled builder. The nearest titles were carpenter, concreter, construction labourer, construction project manager and concrete supervisor, and SEEK filed one concreter and carpenter ad under Building Trades.

What FIFO construction jobs ask for

The ads asked for:

  • A White Card, the construction induction card, in the ads from Western Work Force, Connect Resources and one construction contractor
  • A police clearance and a WA driver's licence in one agency's formwork ad, and a manual licence in another
  • A trade certificate and basic tools, in Fetch's carpenter ad

After the offer, the employer arranges:

  • The flights from the airport the job flies from, and the site induction

FIFO construction jobs Western Australia: rosters, and where they fly from

Fetch Recruitment's carpenter ad, an agency's ad for concreters and supervisors and a construction contractor's major project ad ran 2:1. Western Work Force's formwork ad said 2:1 or 3:1 in the Goldfields, and 14:7 was the roster in an ad for plant operators. A project supervisor ad said 8:6.

Fetch's carpenter ad was days only, on 11.5-hour days.

The concreter and supervisor roles flew ex Perth. One underground mining contractor's ad said "Interstate flights available for the right candidates", and the 14:7 ad's flights left from major capital cities. The rosters page has what each roster gives back.

How much do FIFO construction jobs pay?

Short answer

FIFO construction pay in the October 2026 ads ran from $55 to $70 an hour on hourly ads, and from $120,000 to $150,000 a year on a salaried carpenter ad.

RoleAdvertised paySource
Carpenter, hourly$65 - $70 per hourSEEK, Fetch Recruitment, Oct 2026
Carpenter, salaried$120,000 – $150,000 per yearSEEK, KHG Contracting, Oct 2026
Concreter and formwork carpenter, hourlyCasual flat rate $60 per hour plus superSEEK, Taurus Recruitment, Oct 2026
Civil plant operator$65 – $70 per hourSEEK, MACFORCE Australia, Oct 2026
Trade assistant$55 per hourSEEK, Fetch Recruitment, Oct 2026
Construction electrician$60 – $70 per hour + SuperSEEK, Twoticks, Oct 2026

Only ads that stated a figure are in the table. Most don't.

The hourly rows are rates for each hour worked, and the salaried row is a full-time job. The pay calculator turns any rate and roster into a year, and the carpenter, operator and trade assistant pages have more of those ads.

What is FIFO construction work, day to day?

FIFO construction jobs Australia: what gets built

The October 2026 ads for FIFO construction across Australia were for camp builds and camp extensions, civil and dewatering teams on Pilbara projects, concrete and formwork crews on mine sites, a solar farm and underground mining construction.

Construction jobs start with the project. One carpenter ad was for an ASAP start on a camp refurbishment, and it said you "Must Be Able To Start This Week".

A typical day in FIFO construction work

A concrete and formwork crew's day, as one formwork ad put it, is "Formwork installation, concrete preparation, stripping and general site duties". Formwork is the mould the concrete is poured into, and stripping is taking it off once the concrete has set.

Civil operators drive the loaders, excavators and dozers that cut and shape the ground. Their ads offered FIFO and local work together, with DIDO, drive in drive out, as the third option.

What is FIFO construction work really like?

Short answer

FIFO construction work is long days on a build that ends when the project does, often paid by the hour to a casual or a contractor. Some ads were full time, with annual and personal leave.

Several casual and contract ads offered weekly pay by the hour, and the work lasted as long as the project: six months on one camp extension, years of work lined up on a contractor's. Finding the next job is part of the work.

Where does a FIFO construction job lead?

Short answer

A FIFO construction job leads to supervisor roles, and to other work through the tickets and licences you collect on the way. The supervisor ads ask for civil experience.

FIFO construction supervisor: what the ads want

A concrete supervisor ad wanted at least three years in civil construction, a trade background preferred, to lead 20 to 25 crew on earthworks and concrete builds. Another, for civil supervisors, wanted "Proven experience supervising civil and concreting works".

Western Work Force's construction supervisor ad asked for a minimum of three years supervising FIFO civil projects.

Tickets and licences on the way up

One contractor's ad offered "Ticket, VOC and licence support to grow your skillset". A VOC is a verification of competency, the check that you can run a machine or do a task safely, and the operator page covers the machines.

Is a FIFO construction job right for you?

Three honest questions

  1. Are you fine with work that stops when the build is done? Several ads were casual or contract, so you will be looking again when the build ends.
  2. Can you start at short notice? Crews are put together when a project needs them, and the ads wanted people who could start soon.
  3. Do you want the hourly rate or the leave? A casual gets the hourly rate, while a full-time job brings leave.

Ready to look?

If you've read this far and still want in, get the tickets and the licence sorted. Put your trade or site work in the first line of the resume.

Fake ads turn up on real job boards too. An ad that asks you to pay a fee before you start is a warning sign: report it to Scamwatch (opens in a new tab).

Trade, ticket or White Card in hand and ready for a build? The other question is whether the life fits. Six questions, three minutes, free.
