FIFO Truck Driver Jobs

A road train with three side tipper trailers being loaded with ore by a front-end loader at a mine stockpile, a conveyor behind and a worker in hi-vis beside the cab

One road train driver spent years around trucks, selling them, before a Facebook ad came up for a program for drivers new to mining. Within weeks, he said in his video, he was driving road trains on a mine site. In FIFO truck driving, the licence you hold decides which truck you can apply for. The road train ads want an MC (multi-combination) licence, the delivery and service truck ads an HR (heavy rigid) licence, and the dump trucks in the pit a car licence and hours on the machine. Start with the one you hold.

What a FIFO truck driver is

A FIFO truck driver drives a truck at a remote mine on a fly in fly out roster. The trucks are the pit's dump trucks, the road trains hauling between pits, plants and ports, and the HR trucks and water carts working around the sites.

FIFO truck driver jobs: Where to start

Find FIFO truck driver jobs

Search FIFO truck driver on SEEK (opens in a new tab), on Indeed (opens in a new tab) and on Jora (opens in a new tab), and also "road train", "MC driver" and "HR driver". Dump truck jobs have their own searches, on the dump truck page.

Before you apply, check where each ad's flights leave from, called the point of hire. Getting there is usually up to you.

Can you get FIFO truck driving jobs with no experience?

Short answer

FIFO truck driving jobs with no mining experience exist, but the road truck ads want the licence first, and the licence takes years. Without one, the way in is the pit, where dump truck traineeships (paid jobs with the training built in) and entry level ads train you on the site's own trucks.

The licence comes first: from a car licence to an MC

Every truck licence is an upgrade from the car licence, held for long enough. In WA, Queensland and New South Wales, an HR licence needs two years on a car licence, while an MC licence needs a year on an HR or HC. So the earliest MC comes about three years after your first licence.

WA won't issue an HR to a driver on P plates, and its MC test is done through an approved training provider. The HC licence, for a prime mover and one semi-trailer, is a step some drivers take between the two.

FIFO truck driving jobs with no experience in WA: road train programs for licence holders

MLG Oz's new-to-industry program trains MC holders who are new to mining as road train operators, paid while they learn. It starts with ten days of training in Perth and a couple of days in the passenger seat beside an experienced driver, then three weeks of day shift before nights.

An entry level MC driver ad on Jora said "No prior mining experience needed", and asked for an MC licence, a White Card and police clearance. For MC holders from outside mining, a water cart ad from a WA haulage firm welcomed "a background in farming, livestock or logging".

How do you become a FIFO truck driver, step by step?

Short answer

You become a FIFO truck driver by moving up from a car licence to an HR, then an MC, with hours on trucks in town at each step. Some mining contractors run programs that train MC drivers on their road trains.

From a car licence, in WA

  1. Get your HR licence as soon as WA's rules allow (when); WA residents can do the course fee-free at TAFE in Perth (where to do it). Every course asks for your USI (Unique Student Identifier), a free number you make online.
  2. Drive HR trucks for at least a year, in town or on a mine's supply runs, since the MC needs that time first (the HR jobs).
  3. Then upgrade to an MC licence, which road trains need in every state, and check which gearbox the test truck has, because an automatic limits your licence (courses and costs).
  4. Get a police check, and a White Card for the ads that want one (what else the ads ask for).
  5. Base yourself in Perth if you can, though a few haulage firms fly drivers from the other capitals (where they fly from).
  6. Apply to the new-to-industry programs, such as MLG Oz's, and to entry level road train ads (the programs).
  7. Once you're offered the job, the employer books the medical and drug test and the site inductions.
  8. On your first swing, expect an alarm before four, a check of the truck before you drive, and a twelve-hour day of loads (a day on the road trains).

Outside WA

In Queensland, the October 2026 truck ads were for the pit and underground, flying from Rockhampton, Townsville or Cairns (Queensland's ads). A coal mine there also wants Standard 11, the coal mine induction, and a coal board medical, which the employer pays for. In South Australia, an Adelaide firm flew HC drivers to the Cooper Basin (beyond WA and Queensland).

What are fly in fly out truck driver jobs, and who hires?

Short answer

Fly in fly out truck driver jobs are driving a mine's dump trucks, road trains, HR trucks and water carts, for haulage contractors, the mining companies and labour hire agencies. The contractors run many of the road trains for the miners.

MLG Oz advertised for experienced MC operators with flights, accommodation and meals paid, and Mineral Resources' mining services arm ran a training program for experienced MC drivers on its road trains at Onslow Iron. Niche Resources advertised MC drivers on FIFO and drive-in drive-out rosters.

The trucks in the ads

  • Road trains, on an MC licence, hauling ore from pit to plant or port
  • HR trucks carrying supplies and water to and around mine sites
  • Water carts, on an HR, HC or MC licence
  • Vacuum trucks and other service trucks, on an HR licence
  • Underground trucks, and the nipper jobs that supply the crews underground
  • Dump and haul trucks, which have a page of their own

FIFO truck driver: what the ads call them

The ads seldom said truck driver. The titles were road train operator, MC driver, HR driver and water cart operator, with "Truck Driver (HR / MC)" on one Pilbara ad, so search for the truck and the licence, not just the words truck driver.

FIFO HR truck driver jobs: deliveries, water and service trucks

The HR jobs were supply runs. A Pilbara contractor's ad for HR and MC drivers was to "deliver essential goods to various mine sites across the Pilbara region". Another FIFO ad, for an HR driver, was for delivering supplies and bottled water around one site, with heavy manual handling.

A vacuum truck ad for remote Rio Tinto sites asked for an HR licence, and a Queensland water cart ad took either an HR or an HC.

What do you need to become a FIFO truck driver?

On top of the licence and the police check, the ads also asked for:

  • Hours on the same kind of truck, such as "Proven experience operating Triple Side Tippers both Road Ranger and Automatic" in MLG Oz's ad
  • A White Card, on the entry level MC ad
  • An MSIC (Maritime Security Identification Card), the background-checked card for working in port and offshore security zones, on one HR delivery ad

FIFO truck driving jobs in WA: 2:1 on most, 4:2 for interstate drivers

Most WA truck ads ran 2:1, two weeks on and one week off, from Perth. One road train contractor offered 2:1 to WA residents and 4:2 to drivers from interstate, and Niche Resources advertised both rosters.

A Pilbara delivery ad ran 2:2, a fortnight on and a fortnight off, on day shift only.

Fly in fly out truck driver jobs from Perth and the capital cities

Most ads flew from Perth. Some road train contractors paid for flights from further away: MLG Oz's ad said "Flights PAID from capital cities across Australia".

FIFO truck driver and truck driving jobs in QLD

The Queensland FIFO truck ads were haul trucks and underground trucks. A labour hire ad offered "Permanent FIFO Haul Truck Operator roles! FIFO Rockhampton, Townsville & Cairns" and said "Camp + Meals Provided". A north Queensland underground ad wanted "UG Truckies and Service Crew", with "training on site".

FIFO truck driver jobs in Australia beyond WA and Queensland

An Adelaide earthmoving firm's FIFO ad for truck drivers in the Cooper Basin ran 2:2, asked for an HC licence, and flew from most capital cities.

What are FIFO road train and MC truck driver jobs?

Short answer

FIFO road train jobs are for MC drivers, hauling ore, waste or fuel on a prime mover towing two or more trailers. Most October 2026 ads wanted MC experience on triples or quads, and one entry level ad took licence holders new to mining.

FIFO MC driver jobs in WA: what the ads offered

One road train ad listed Kenworth and Mack prime movers, manual Road Ranger gearboxes and automatics, and "Triple & Quad Side Tippers". An iron ore miner's quad road trains ran a "6 Days, 6 Nights, 6 Off" roster.

A Leonora waste ad ran day shift only, on a 12:7:9:7 roster (twelve days on, seven off, nine on, seven off), with "Your own permanent room and bathroom", though it wanted "Waste industry experience essential".

Some road jobs don't end back at camp. One fuel haulier's FIFO MC job carried liquefied natural gas in triple road train tankers on two to three day trips out of Karratha, and the driver slept in the truck.

FIFO road train driver jobs: what the ads ask for on top of the MC

The road train jobs called for manual gearbox drivers. A Goldfields haulage firm's ad said "18 Speed Road Ranger manual gearbox experience essential", and wanted experience "Tipping on the Run at the ROM", the run-of-mine pad where ore is stockpiled for the crusher.

Side tipper drivers load their own trailers. One contractor's ad wanted "Experience self-loading with a front-end loader" and a "Commercial Driver Fatigue Management Certificate (within the last 2 years)", the course in managing your hours and rest on long hauls.

How much is a FIFO truck driver salary?

Short answer

The October 2026 road train and HR ads paid FIFO truck drivers $40 to $57 an hour, and salaried road train packages started at $145,000. Dump truck ads in the pit paid more by the hour, $50 to $65 in October 2026.

What is FIFO truck driver work, day to day?

A day on the road trains

A road train driver in an MLG Oz video set his alarm for 3:20, ate when breakfast opened at a quarter to four, and was at the pre-start meeting at 5:30 on the dot. The day ran a full twelve hours, to 5:30 in the afternoon, and he did "six or seven loads" on the run he filmed.

Two road train ads listed pre-start and post-trip inspections of the truck as part of every shift, along with the logbooks and the mileage, fuel and delivery records.

What is FIFO truck driving really like?

Short answer

FIFO truck driving is twelve-hour days that often start before dawn, on the same run, with fatigue rules built around them. The first day of a swing starts earliest, because of the flight.

A driver who runs a hook-lift bin truck around a Pilbara mine filmed his first day, which started at about half past two in the morning. He said plenty of water is the key to long stints in the trucks.

If a long swing gets dark, Lifeline is 13 11 14, and the FIFO mental health page has the rest of the help.

Where does a FIFO truck driver job lead?

Short answer

A FIFO truck driver job leads to bigger combinations and other machines on site. A new-to-industry road train driver said in a video that he was trained on the loaders after a few months.

Promotion also runs from the water cart to the road train: one family-owned haulage firm was hiring because it had moved its water cart operators up to road trains at three Goldfields sites. The operator page has the loaders and the other machines.

Is a FIFO truck driver job right for you?

Three honest questions

  1. Do you have the licence, or the years to get it? Road train jobs wanted an MC and time on the big combinations, and the licence alone takes years.
  2. Can you start at half past three? One road train driver's alarm went at 3:20 every work day.
  3. Will you take casual work to get started? The Pilbara delivery job was casual, while the training program for MC drivers was full time.

If you've read this far and still want in, match your licence class to the ad. Put your licence and the combinations you've driven, triples or quads, in the first line of the resume.

Fake ads turn up on real job boards too. An ad that asks you to pay a fee before you start is a warning sign: report it to Scamwatch (opens in a new tab).

Licence in hand and ready for a cab? The other question is whether the life fits. Six questions, three minutes, free.
