FIFO Packing List

Last updated: October 2026

A worker in a hi-vis shirt, seen from behind, packing a wheeled duffel on his bed beside his kit: boots, work shirts, a crib bag, toiletries, thongs, a head torch, earplugs, medicines, a power bank and headphones

Print it. Pack to it. Stick it inside the locker door.

Tick what you already own. What's left is your shopping list.

Women heading to site: there's a section for you on page 2.

Before you buy anything, ask the company what it supplies and what your baggage limit is. The questions are on page 2.

Optional: free delivery with Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is Amazon's membership that gives free delivery on eligible items, plus shows you can download to watch in the donga, and ad-free music. If you're buying several things on this list, its 30-day free trial covers the delivery. It becomes a paid membership unless you cancel before the trial ends. Free delivery doesn't reach some remote areas, so have orders sent home before you fly.

If you buy through these links, I receive a small commission, which I appreciate. It doesn't change what's on the list. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Every site is different

Ask these first. The answers change what goes in the bag.

Ask before you pack

Ask your supervisor, recruiter or the camp. A two-minute phone call saves a wasted bag.

  1. What's my baggage limit?Charter flights are often 10 to 15kg checked plus a small carry-on. Weigh your bag at home. Over? Ask if you can pre-buy extra baggage.
  2. Do I keep my room, or change rooms every swing?Changing rooms ("motelling") means nothing stays behind. Pack lighter.
  3. Telstra or Optus at site? Some sites have only one. Get a SIM that works there.
  4. Is the camp dry? Is there daily breath testing?Find out before you pack any alcohol.
  5. What uniform and safety gear do you supply?Boots, hi-vis and glasses vary by company.
  6. Do I bring my own tools? Some sites supply them. If you bring yours, they count in your baggage limit. Zip-up tool bags pack inside your duffel.
  7. Is laundry powder supplied? Is there storage? Some camps give you a lockable cupboard. Leave toiletries and a charger there.

If you have room

Don't pack

  • Power banks, vapes or spare batteries in your checked bag.Airline rule: they go in your carry-on or on you.
  • Knives or multitools in your carry-on.They'll be taken at security. Many sites ban personal knives anyway.
  • Alcohol for a dry camp.Check first. Getting caught can cost you the job.
  • Anything you wouldn't want found.Bags can be searched, and drug testing is zero tolerance.

First few swings

  • Stay out of the wet mess.
  • Drink more water than you think.
  • Look after your feet. Sore feet ruin a swing.
  • Set a regular call time with home, and stick to it.
  • Keep the exit plan in your wallet.
