FIFO Jobs Darwin

Workers in orange hi-vis walk across a wet tarmac to board a turboprop charter under a wet-season storm, with the harbour on the horizon behind them

Darwin is a FIFO town in its own right. The Territory's mines are a short flight from the city and far from anywhere else, so many employers fly their crews from Darwin Airport and say so in the ad. A Darwin address puts you one flight from a gold mine, the McArthur River zinc mine, the manganese mine on Groote Eylandt and the camps that feed them. If you're in Darwin and thought FIFO meant moving south, read the ads first: a good share of them are written for you.

What FIFO from Darwin is

FIFO jobs in Darwin are jobs on the Territory's mines, camps and projects that fly from Darwin Airport: a flight to site, a swing in camp, and the flight back. Darwin is the Territory's own hub, so the employer books the flight. Some mines give a choice of two departure cities, and the ad says which.

FIFO jobs Darwin: Where to start

Find FIFO jobs in Darwin

The flights leave from Darwin Airport. The ads are on SEEK (opens in a new tab), Indeed (opens in a new tab) and Jora (opens in a new tab): search "FIFO Darwin", "FIFO NT" and "ex Darwin", which is how the agencies write it. Then read each ad's departure line, because some offer Perth as well as Darwin, and one placed in Darwin was for camps in Queensland.

Are there FIFO jobs in Darwin?

Short answer

There are FIFO jobs in Darwin, and in September 2026 they ran from dump truck and excavator operators to camp and kitchen staff, site administrators, trade assistants and trainees. Many of the ads said "FIFO from Darwin" or "ex Darwin".

Operators: a gold mine with a choice of departure city

One of the biggest groups of September's ads was for a new gold mine in the Territory, which the ads don't name. Fetch wanted dump truck operators on a 2:2 roster, two weeks on and two off, "FIFO Ex Darwin OR Perth", and excavator all-rounders on the same roster. Techforce wanted "Experienced 777 Dump Truck Operators" for a gold mine on 2:2, from Darwin or Perth. Those ads asked for one to three years' experience.

The other operator ads were the Territory's own. Glencore was hiring ancillary operators at McArthur River, the drivers of the water carts, graders and other machines around the trucks, on seven days, seven nights and fourteen off. NRW was hiring drivers for its Cat 777 dump trucks on 2:1 for its Darwin project, and its Indeed ad named the work as open-cut mining at the Finniss lithium project. One agency wanted moxy operators, who drive the articulated dump trucks, "FIFO ex Darwin", and a second wanted civil operators, the crews that build roads and earthworks, on dozers, excavators and moxies for a remote NT mine.

Camp jobs: Groote Eylandt and the villages

The camp companies fly from Darwin to the island and the mine villages. Compass was hiring for Groote Eylandt, from bar, retail and supermarket staff to kitchen, housekeeping and maintenance crews for the manganese mine's village, and wanted a head chef for the Territory. Sodexo's hospitality and utility ad, on 14:7 from Darwin, was for its regional Queensland camps, and a second Sodexo listing, on 2:1 from Darwin, was for a range of camp jobs. Those are the doors for someone with kitchen, cleaning or housekeeping experience and none on a mine.

FIFO jobs in Darwin with no experience

Three ads were for people new to mining. MLG's "New to Industry Program" trains road train operators for the mines, for people who already hold an MC (multi-combination) licence, the road train licence, and want the mine experience to go with it. A drilling company advertised a trainee blast hole driller, and a recruiter's driller's offsider ad in Darwin was headed "Entry Level". The camp companies are the other door, and a kitchen is an easier first swing than a rig.

FIFO jobs NT for trades and trade assistants

The trade ads were mechanics and electricians. A diesel workshop wanted HD (heavy diesel) mechanics, mobile plant mechanics and drill fitters, and an agency wanted electricians holding an NT electrical licence. The trade assistant ads were local as much as fly-in. One wanted a confined space ticket for projects in "Darwin, Katherine & Jabiru", and another wanted a trade assistant for plumbing work in remote communities, "Based in Darwin, Fly/drive across NT".

How do you get a FIFO job in Darwin, and who hires?

Short answer

You get a FIFO job in Darwin through the labour hire agencies that crew the Territory mines, the camp companies, and the mine owners direct. Darwin is a small town for hiring, and the agencies wrote most of the operator ads in September 2026.

A man in shorts and thongs winds down the jockey wheel of a caravan hitched to a muddy four-wheel drive in a Darwin driveway, a hi-vis shirt slung over the drawbar and a fishing rod on the roof rack
Back from site, a Darwin worker's week off starts in the driveway, hitching up the caravan to go fishing.

The agencies are the front door, and a casual pool is how a Territory mine fills a seat at short notice. The owners' own ads, Glencore's at McArthur River and South32's on Groote Eylandt, were for experienced people, and they are where the agency years lead.

Step by step, from Darwin

  1. Get your licence, a national police check and proof of your working rights ready, because the operator ads ask for them together (what the ads ask for).
  2. Do your White Card as a live online class if you like, and allow up to 20 business days for the card. Every course asks for your USI (Unique Student Identifier), a free number you make online.
  3. If you've worked in a kitchen or done cleaning, start with the camp companies, which staff the Groote Eylandt village and the mines' own camps (camp jobs).
  4. With no experience at all, look at the trainee and entry-level drilling ads, and MLG's road train program if you have an MC licence (no experience).
  5. Never pay an agency or anyone else to put you forward for a job (the fee rule).
  6. Sign up with the Darwin agencies, and search "ex Darwin" as well as "FIFO Darwin" (the operator ads).
  7. Once you're offered the job, your employer arranges the medical and drug test, then the induction and your seat on the charter.
  8. On your first swing, expect a short flight before dawn, a remote camp and twelve-hour days, and the wet from October to April (a typical swing).

FIFO jobs Northern Territory outside Darwin: Alice Springs and Katherine

Alice Springs and Katherine have FIFO jobs of their own. Among the snapshot's October ads, the Territory's plumber and carpenter ads were placed in Alice Springs, Katherine and Wadeye, a remote community whose ad was for FIFO carpenters. One labour hire ad for a project administrator in Alice Springs was "FIFO FROM DARWIN", which is the other way round: live in Darwin, fly to the centre. For someone already in the centre, the ad's departure point is the line to read.

What the ads ask for

The ads asked for:

  • A driver's licence, and an HR (heavy rigid) or MC licence for the 777 dump truck jobs
  • A national police clearance and full Australian working rights, which the operator ads listed together

After the offer, the employer arranges:

  • A pre-employment medical and a drug screen, which a camp ad listed with the police clearance
  • The site induction and the charter from Darwin

Nice to have, and what each one gets you:

  • Confined space: the trade assistant job that asked for a current ticket
  • An MC licence: MLG's trainee program, which starts from it
  • Time on a 777: the gold mine operator jobs

The tickets page has the safety tickets and what they cost.

Groote Eylandt FIFO jobs

Groote Eylandt is an island off Arnhem Land with a manganese mine, flown to from Darwin. South32, which runs the mine, wanted a mining supervisor in September 2026, and WorkPac was hiring mobile plant operators for the island in October.

How much do FIFO jobs in Darwin pay?

Short answer

FIFO jobs in Darwin and across the Territory paid $50 to $85 an hour in the October 2026 pay snapshot. Diesel mechanics in Darwin were at the top, and an operator at Gove and a carpenter in Alice Springs were at the bottom. The salaried camp jobs ran from $91,804 a year for a hospitality all-rounder to $99,571 to $100,528 for a chef.

Only ads that stated a figure are in the table. Most don't.

To see what any of those comes to over a swing or a year after tax, put it into the FIFO pay calculator; the salary page has every job side by side.

Some Territory ads add allowances on top of the pay. Glencore's ads listed an "NT residency payment" and "location + roster allowances", and Hastings Deering, a heavy equipment dealer, offered a "24.5% area allowance" to an administrator in Darwin. Several of the operator jobs were casual or contract, with super on top and no paid leave, while the camp salaries came with the flights, the room and the meals.

What is FIFO work from Darwin like day to day?

A typical swing from Darwin

The swing starts at the airport in the dark, a flight of an hour or two, and a bus or a ute at the other end. The camp is the village of rooms, mess and gym beside the mine, and in the Territory it is a long way from anywhere: the nearest town might be a roadhouse. The day is twelve hours, days or nights, and the roster brings you back to Darwin for a fortnight or a week.

The part that isn't in the ad is the weather. From about October to April the Top End is in the wet. The days are in the low thirties and feel like forty in the humidity, the storms come in the afternoon, and roads get cut, so the charter matters more than ever. The dry, from about May to September, is the main season for roads and earthworks, and one agency's civil operator ad in September offered "Work available for remainder of the 2026 season!"

What is it really like doing FIFO from Darwin?

Short answer

FIFO from Darwin is a short flight to a hot, remote camp, then home to the coast for a week or two. The wet season decides the rest: for about half the year the heat and the rain make every outdoor shift harder.

A FIFO worker in orange hi-vis stands on a tropical verandah with his bags and a fishing rod, looking across the street at removalists loading a truck and two houses with For Sale signs
Some come to Darwin to stay, and some are passing through.

The ads tell most of it. The mines fly from Darwin because they are too far to drive, and the civil work runs by the season because the wet stops the roadworks and earthworks. The rest is distance: a Territory camp is hours from the next town, and further from the next mine.

What the ads don't say is that a Darwin FIFO worker has somewhere to be on the week off. The city is on the coast, and the fishing is a reason people stay. If a swing turns bad, Lifeline is 13 11 14, any hour.

Where does FIFO from Darwin lead?

Short answer

FIFO from Darwin leads to the mine owner's own crew, which the agencies' pools feed, or to the mines of other states. Either way, the next job asks for the mine experience the first one gives you.

The agency job is the reference. Techforce's gold mine ad offered "Permanent opportunities after three months", and the mine owners' own jobs are the step after that. One of Glencore's McArthur River ads, for an administration officer, offered "long-term security to 2038".

The other move is west: the time a Darwin operator puts in at the gold mine is the experience the western mines ask for. The operator page has where that door goes.

Is FIFO from Darwin right for you?

Two honest questions

  1. Can you work the wet? The wet season is hot, humid and stormy, and the mine jobs carry on through it. If you've only worked a Darwin dry, the first wet swing is the test.
  2. Do you want to stay? Decide whether Darwin is home or a stepping stone before you sign a permanent roster, because the ads are different for each.

Ready to look?

If you've read this far and still want in, have the paperwork in one file, then search the Darwin boards and read the roster line on every ad for "ex Darwin".

Fake ads turn up on real job boards too. An ad that asks you to pay a fee before you start is a warning sign: report it to Scamwatch (opens in a new tab).

The job is one question. Whether the life suits you is six more. Three minutes. Free.
