Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 2026

FlyInFlyOut.au is a guide to FIFO work in Australia, written by me, Neil Mattingley, in Perth. This policy explains what the site collects about you, what happens to it and what you can do about it. The short version: the site doesn't ask for your name, doesn't use advertising tools, and doesn't sell anything about you. It counts visits with Google Analytics, so I can see which pages help.

What the site collects

Your answers and figures stay with you. The quiz, the pay calculator and the roster calculator work in your browser. What you enter isn't sent to me, stored by me or passed to Google Analytics, and the roster calculator's calendar file is made on your own device too.

Two tools remember things on your device. The packing list remembers which items you've ticked, and the roster calculator remembers your roster and dates, so they're still there when you come back. They keep this in your browser's storage on your own device, and it never reaches me. Clearing your browser's data for this site removes it.

Emails you send me. If you email me, I get your email address and whatever you write. I use them only to reply, and to fix the site if you've told me something's wrong.

Routine records of visits. Like any website, the service that hosts the site keeps standard records of each visit: your IP address, your browser, the page you asked for and the time. They're used to keep the site running and secure, not to work out who you are.

How people use the site. Google Analytics counts visits for me: which pages people read, how long they stay and which links to other sites they follow. It also records what kind of device they use and roughly where they are: the town or city, not the street. Google shows me numbers, not names, and I use them to see which pages help and which need work.

Cookies

Google Analytics sets cookies. They're small files that let Google tell a new visitor from someone coming back. They don't hold your name, and they last two years from your last visit unless you clear them. Visitors in the UK and Europe don't get them, because the cookie rules there are stricter. The site doesn't use advertising or social media tracking.

You can switch Google Analytics off. Google's opt-out add-on (opens in a new tab) stops it in your browser. Google's own page, How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services (opens in a new tab), explains what it does with the information.

Other sites set their own. Many links go to other sites: job boards, employers, training providers, government pages and shops. When you follow one, that site's own privacy policy applies, and it may set cookies of its own.

Some links earn me a commission. If you follow one of my Amazon links, Amazon uses cookies to record that you came from FlyInFlyOut.au, so it can pay me a small commission if you buy something. Amazon tells me which products were bought, not who bought them. Amazon's privacy notice, linked at the foot of every page on amazon.com.au, explains what it collects, and you can block or delete cookies in your browser's settings.

Who sees your information

I don't sell, rent or trade personal information. I share it only with the services that run the site, such as the host, Google Analytics and my email provider, or when the law requires it. The site is hosted by SiteGround on servers in Sydney. Other services, such as Google Analytics and email, may store information on servers outside Australia, including in the United States.

Seeing, correcting or deleting your information

You can ask what I hold about you, which in practice means any emails you've sent me, and ask me to correct or delete it. Email neil@flyinflyout.au and I'll answer within 30 days, at no charge.

Complaints

If you think I've mishandled your information, email me first and I'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with my answer, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au (opens in a new tab) or on 1300 363 992.

Children and automated decisions

The site is written for adults looking for work, and it doesn't knowingly collect information about children. It doesn't use personal information to make decisions about anyone by computer: the quiz works out its answer in your browser and keeps nothing.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. It follows the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988.
